Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well and staying in good spirits on your weight loss journeys. I believe in you!
I’m posting today because of a conundrum that’s been weighing on me for a while now. I’m 29, 5’1”, and for the last year and a half, my weight has stayed basically the same, between 160-165.
Pre-COVID, I was very active, swimming a mile 3 times per week, doing weight training 3x per week, and regularly hitting 15k steps per day. I weighed 135 pounds and looked and felt great. I was eating 1800 calories per day and maintaining my weight while eating whatever I wanted, within reason. This was a HUGE success for me as I have struggled with disordered eating, and at one time weighed only 100 pounds. To maintain this weight, I was eating 1000 calories per day, doing intermittent fasting on keto, and working out 6 days per week. I didn’t recognize it at the time, but this was me in a very disordered place—I was weighing myself multiple times per day, constantly obsessing over my appearance, taking pics and body checking, the works.
With the pandemic, a big move, and the stress of working on a dissertation while dealing with some personal issues, I turned to food for comfort and gained the 25-30 pounds I’ve held onto for the last year. Actually, in some ways, maintaining this weight has been good for me too, because it indicates to me that my metabolism is in good working order and my body is at homeostasis.
But now, I’m looking to lose some weight and get back to a healthier place. I try to go on long walks 3 times per week and I weight train 3-4 times per week. I have an exercise bike I’m going to start using a bit more to increase my cardio. I feel pretty good about this aspect of my health journey.
My main question is regarding diet and macro tracking. The thing is… I hate MyFitnessPal. Just opening it reminds me of the years I’ve spent obsessing over what I ate and measuring my food to the gram so I could be as thin as possible. People, I was measuring my granola bars because I didn’t trust they matched the weight given in he nutrition label on the package. As far back as my freshman year of HS, I remember using this app to starve myself. And I am really averse to using it, or other apps like it, because I know it leads me to become obsessive and unhealthy about my intake. But I also know… calories in, calories out.
I feel that I generally eat healthfully. A normal day of eating for me might be 3 hard boiled eggs and a spinach smoothie for breakfast, a turkey sandwich and hummus and carrots or an apple for lunch, and a protein and some veggies or a hearty soup or stew for dinner. I treat myself to two chips ahoy cookies and an 8oz glass of milk for dessert. I have two cups of coffee per day and use about 2 teaspoons of powdered creamer in them. I drink about a gallon of water per day.
Is there hope for me to lose the 25-30 pounds I’ve gained without counting calories? Can I continue to make generally healthful choices and see the change in my weigh I’d lIke? What would you do in my situation in order to maintain a healthy mindset around weight loss while also making progress?

Hello! My wife and I purchased our first house this past Spring and we were so excited! Growing up I wasn't taught a lot of handy things, but through Youtube and my father-in-law, I have learned things such as how to change sink faucets, wire bathroom lights, set toilets, successfully lay tile, and a few other things. One thing I have no clue about is drywall. Our garage is only partially drywalled, with the other half only having the wall in between the outside and the studs showing. As you can imagine it gets really hot in the summer and it's gotten really cold recently. Is it relatively easy with two people to put insulation and hang drywall in order to finish the garage? Do I just attach the drywall to the studs? Are there any special tools we'll need? We have a skill saw, miter saw, and a nail gun, will we need anything else? It doesn't have to be perfect by any means, I just want to be able to control the temperature a little more! Thank you!
